🤓 Discussion Questions: NO TWO PERSONS

🎥 The video replay of our October Book Club meeting

If you missed our book club meeting, you can watch the replay now.

We had such a fantastic discussion of Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman and talked about:

  • How the author weaves in small bits of magic to integrate it into an otherwise “normal” world,

  • Genre—fantasy v. “general” fiction

  • Character types—the use of opposites, as well as whether the author focused more on female characters at the expense of male characters,

  • Show-not-tell: Does the author break the rules??

  • Timelessness—why is this book (and the movie) a modern classic?

In the writer hangout portion, we chatted about:

  • A non-fiction writer wades into fictional waters… what is different between the two?

  • Memoir: don’t tell a full chronology, but choose which facts to put into your story

  • Writing serialized fantasy on Substack, avoiding stretching yourself too thin, and experiments with taking Substack work and turning it into a book on Amazon’s Kindle Select

  • Success at a writing conference! One of our community members tells us how he attended a conference and got interest from several agents/editors.

I hope you enjoy the video replay!

📚 Holiday "Party" Invitation: Our Book Club for Writers and Curious Readers:

Mark your calendar for our low-key, introverted, book people “holiday party”— by which I mean, we all grab a cozy blanket and a mug of hot chocolate and talk about books and writing from the comfort of our own homes. 😊

I decided to bump our next meeting into December, because if we try to squeeze it in before the American Thanksgiving holidays, we’d only have 3 weeks to read the book.

So we’ll meet in early December, and that way, you can read the book on the plane or listen to the audiobook during Thanksgiving travels.

We’ll talk about:

  • our writerly hopes and dreams,

  • set our writing intentions for next year,

  • and of course, discuss our December Book Pick.

Who is invited?

  • Writers who love reading and want to examine stories more closely, and

  • Readers who are curious about why they feel the way they do about a book.

When is the next meeting?

Sunday, December 8, 2024 at 8 pm EDT / 5 pm PDT

🥰 Introverts, you are welcome to keep your cameras off.

What is our next Book Pick?

🤓 No Two Persons by Erica Bauermeister - Discussion Questions

During the book discussion, we’ll chat about:

  • Writing from many different points of view

  • Tying short stories together into a cohesive novel

  • The author’s voice and how it’s used to set the mood/tone of the story

  • Sales and marketing angle: the appeal of novels about writers and books

During the writers’ hangout portion, we will talk about:

  • Setting intentions for our creative practices in 2025:

    • what is a realistic, kind way to approach your writing?

    • what creative goals do you have for yourself?

    • is there anything you’d like to change about your creative practice in 2025, from how you’ve approached it in the past?

I think this is going to be a wonderful conversation!
