Hello, lovelies!
I have an exclusive, special treat for you today—the cover for my new novel, One Year Ago in Spain! I won’t be posting this on social media until tomorrow, so you (my loyal newsletter subscribers) are the first ones to see it!
When my editor asked me for ideas for the cover of this book, I wasn’t sure what I wanted. Normally, we would want One Year Ago in Spain to match the vibe of The Hundred Loves of Juliet, with its pretty watercolor blues and faint silhouettes of Juliets past and a literary feel.
But that was a hardcover. And we—my publisher, my agent, and I—had all decided it was best for One Year Ago in Spain to come out directly in paperback.
The thing is, there’s a different vibe for paperbacks that are published in the summer, you know? You want something you can throw into a tote bag to take on your road trip or to the local pool while you watch your kids swim, something that is bright and maybe makes you feel a little sparkly because it’s summer.
However, I’m terrible with visual design. I’m great with words—I’d better be, I’m a writer—but ask me to choose a painting for a wall? Or brainstorm for a cover for my book?
Someone, please, help!
Luckily, the art department at my publisher is wonderfully imaginative, and they came up with a cover for One Year Ago in Spain that is summery yet whimsical.
I love how the colors pop, how there are Spanish fans and little references to Matías’s painting, and I really love how the sunbeam is shining through him, but in a way you’ll only “get” if you know the premise of the book.
And then Claire… dear, anxious, uptight Claire in her buttoned-up attorney’s outfit… I can’t wait for you to read this book and meet these characters!
»If you have friends who always pack books with them during the summer, share this cover reveal with them so they can add it to their TBR!
Book Description:
Claire Walker has always had her life in perfect order, including her high-powered job at one of Manhattan’s top corporate law firms. Yet the one thing she cannot seem to find is that perfect love to complete it. Until fate drops Matías de León into her life. Matías is a Spanish artist who is everything that Claire is not: free-spirited and creative, chaos to her order. She falls for him, hard—and he for her.
A year later, however, Claire begins to find herself questioning everything about this relationship. How can they possibly work long-term when they’re so different? Might it be best to end it, before they are both in too deep?
Then tragedy strikes while Matías is visiting family in Spain, leaving him gravely wounded in a Madrid hospital. And when Claire drops everything to race to his side, she finds herself the only one who can see and talk to Matías’s soul, detached from his comatose body. But that soul has no memories of his year in New York, of her, or of their relationship. Claire soon realizes that, in order to lure Matías back to his body, she will have to convince him to fall in love with her all over again. But can lightning strike twice? Can the same magic that once brought them together do so again?

What’s On My Nightstand: The Vaster Wilds by Lauren Groff
The Vaster Wilds is about a servant girl who runs away from a famine-gripped settlement (circa early days of the American colonies) to brave out life on her own in the forest. I was worried at first that the prose might be stiff (just because it’s quite historical-sounding), but the rhythm soon relaxed into a beautiful flow. It’s possible this book may be a bit grimmer than what I usually read, but I like to stretch my boundaries every now and then!
It's beautiful! Can't wait to read this.
Love the cover for your new book, and really love the premise. Having fate drop Matias in... love that. I'm writing about fate now and find it really interesting to see how prevalent the idea is in our society.
