COVER REVEAL - Summer Paperback Edition of THE HUNDRED LOVES OF JULIET
Plus, Happiness Sprinkles: My favorites of February and my trip to Seoul, Korea
Hello, lovelies!
It’s an embarrassment of riches lately, in terms of cover reveals for my books! Today I have for you the U.S. summer paperback edition of The Hundred Loves of Juliet!
I feel particularly blessed because most paperbacks don’t get new cover art. But my amazing publisher (Del Rey, part of Penguin Random House) wanted to take the opportunity to give The Hundred Loves of Juliet a summery feeling to match its May 7th publication date!
I love that this new cover feels contemporary yet still nods at Romeo & Juliet with the reenactment of the famous balcony scene.
The other thing I love is how my publisher’s art department made this cover as part of a set with the cover art for One Year Ago in Spain. Even though the novels are standalones (meaning they have nothing to do with each other and can be read totally independently), both covers convey a sense of whimsy and hope. Plus, they look damn good together side-by-side.
You know what else is interesting? We—my publisher, my agent, and I—decided to swap out which author blurb is on the front cover. For the hardcover—which had a more literary or women’s fiction feel—Jodi Picoult’s blurb was right at the top:
But for the more summery, beach bag version, we decided to go with Ashley Poston’s wonderful blurb, since this illustrated cover has similar vibes to her book covers:
So there you have it!
And if you know anyone who hasn’t read The Hundred Loves of Juliet yet, maybe this summer will be the perfect time for them! Go ahead and forward this newsletter to them so they can add The Hundred Loves of Juliet to their Summer Books TBR.
Happiness Sprinkles: Things Worth Smiling About
I’m in Seoul, Korea right now on vacation, so here are a few photos from the trip, as well as your monthly roundup of the things that made me smile. I hope these favorites of mine bring you a few moments of delight, too!
Here’s what I was into in February:
Delicious in Dungeon: This anime has a wacky premise—an intrepid crew in a real life Dungeons and Dragons-type adventure are low on money and can’t afford to buy food, so they have to cook the monsters they kill instead. It’s like Food Network but anime… Weird enough that it works and makes me laugh!
How to Make Stress Your Friend: I just finished a course on The Science of Joy with Dr. Kelly McGonigal through Stanford Continuing Studies, as part of research for the novel I’m working on (codename Kindness.) So when I found out that Dr. McGonigal had given a wildly popular TED talk (14 million+ views), I had to watch it. This is such a fascinating way to re-frame stress and has totally changed my outlook on what stress is (not actually evil) and how to harness it:
A few photos from our vacation in Seoul!
What is more joyous than spending time with my favorite people—my family!—and exploring a new place and culture (especially the food)?
Hmm… I need to work on my Asian photo fingers. Such a lack of commitment in the pinkie and ring fingers. Come on, Evelyn!
At night, the Myeongdong shopping street is lined with over 100 food stalls and becomes an epic night market that puts our American idea of gathering a few food trucks together to shame, haha. I got to eat my favorite Korean dish, japchae, which are sweet potato glass noodles stir-fried with shredded veggies. Tom got croissant taiyaki filled with Nutella (taiyaki is Japanese, but it’s a popular street food in Seoul).
We also had Korean fried chicken and rice cakes in a sweet and spicy gochujang sauce, gimbap (like sushi but the rice isn’t vinegared), egg toast, a giant teriyaki chicken skewer, and dragon beard candy, so we didn’t have room for Oreo churros at the end of the night, but I still took a photo.
The next day, we went to Gyeongbokgung Palace, the main royal palace of the Joseon dynasty, built in 1395 (although the original was destroyed, so this is a restoration, from what I understand). Really incredible and beautiful architecture!
Shout out to newsletter subscribers Krista and Seina, who upgraded their subscriptions to “paid” and bought me cookies! I loved the yakgwa honey cookie (which was decadently baked on top of yet another cookie at Myeongdong Yanggwa Bakery). Thank you, Krista & Seina!
