What to Wear to a Netflix Movie Premiere - DAMSEL!
An author at Hollywood's event of the year
Hello, lovelies—By the time you’re reading this, I’ll be getting ready for Netflix’s Damsel World Premiere! (I arrived in NYC at 2am, but I’m so ready for this party tonight!)
I still can’t believe this is happening. It doesn’t feel like that long ago that I was an unknown, unagented writer.
At the same time, I can believe this is happening… I don’t want to be the kind of person who doesn’t give herself credit for all the years of hard work and perseverance through rejection after rejection after rejection. Because if this was happening to you and you said “I can’t believe it,” I would tell you, “Believe it! You worked for years to get here and you deserve it.”
Anyway! Being styled in all these different gowns was like a makeover montage scene in my own personal movie. So I thought it’d be fun to share all the dresses I tried on.
Take a guess at which one I ended up choosing!
Marchesa Notte: One-shoulder embroidered duchesse-satin gown
I really loved the delicate floral appliqués and the romantic softness of the color of this dress, as well as how the neckline was cut along the shape of the flower petals.
Marchesa Notte: Asymmetric floral-print chiffon gown
I love a good strapless bustier (my wedding dress had one, too), and this gown was both elegant and feminine, without the floral pattern being too loud. I really adored the different textures, too, in the bodice and skirt.
Mac Duggal: Strapless High-Low Satin Gown
I don’t own many dresses in general, since I work from home and can get away with pajamas if I want to. But the dresses I do own mostly have high-low hems. I think it’s because I’m not a particularly tall person; somehow, the combination of high in front and long in back helps give my silhouette some height. Plus, the eye-catching red of this gown made me feel confident and bold.
Marchesa Notte: One-shoulder tiered glittered tulle gown
You’re seeing a pattern here. To me, Marchesa Notte’s styles are a perfect intersection of elegance and whimsy. This gown was obviously a quieter dress than the red Mac Duggal one I tried before. I loved the starry details and the slim silhouette.
Zuhair Murad: Chiffon lame long dress
My most glamorous friend, author Roshani Chokshi, told me I had to wear Zuhair Murad. This gown is what I imagine an ocean goddess would wear as she emerged from the sea to claim her throne.
Mac Duggal Sequined Sweetheart Tulle Gown
I loved the flirty hemlines of the two Mac Duggal dresses I tried on. I wasn’t sure how this would look with my black hair (in photos, my hair sometimes just disappears into black clothing). But with the spaghetti straps, it worked well!
Badgley Mischka: Poppy Red Georgette Gown
This gown reminded me of my prom dress (in a good way), but fancier! I was drawn to the quirky asymmetrical ruffle and the way the fabric on the rest of the gown was ruched toward it. (Is that the right way to use the word “ruched”? I don’t know! Like I said, I usually work at home in pajamas!)
Marchesa Notte: Gathered glittered tulle gown
And finally, another Marchesa Notte dress to end my makeover montage. I wasn’t sure about this one from the photo, because I worried that the gold might’ve looked gaudy in person. But it didn’t—it was tastefully luxurious instead.
What would you wear if you were attending the premiere? One of these gowns or something else? (In my next newsletter, I’ll reveal which dress I ended up choosing.)

I don't know your personal style, but I love the Marchesa Notte asymmetric floral-print chiffon gown's colors and the layered skirt is gorgeous. The Zuhair Murad chiffon lame is a beautiful color and very stunning. The Mac Dugal is fun and flirty. The Marchesa Notte glittered tulle gown and colors are sophisticated. I choose the MARCHESA NOTTE ASSYMETRIC FLORAL-PRINT CHIFFON for you. Hey, this was fun! Congratulations!
